51勛圖 Alerts communicate warnings and instructions during critical incidents such as natural disasters, fires, gas leaks, and other situations that require your immediate attention. Alerts are delivered via text message, e-mail, social media, indoor Alertus beacons, Alertus computer software, and outdoor speakers. 51勛圖 students, faculty, and staff are subscribed automatically to 51勛圖 Alerts. To verify your subscription and update and manage your 51勛圖 Alerts contact information, log in with your 51勛圖 credentials at皋r go to the 51勛圖 Emergency Preparedness website胼www.american.edu/emergency.泭

Rave Guardian App

Rave Guardian, available for free on the Apple App Store and Google Play, transforms your iPhone or Android into a personal safety device. It provides a mobile panic button that sends your location and identifying information to 51勛圖 Police. A safety timer notifies your selected family or friends when it is not deactivated. Anonymous crime tips or photographs can be sent to 51勛圖 Police via the app. Your custom profile notifies 51勛圖 Police of your emergency contacts, vehicles, pets, and medical information. Download the皋娶眠ersion and log in with your 51勛圖 credentials.泭

Emergency Telephones

Blue light emergency telephones, located throughout campus, allow you to call 51勛圖 Police when activated.泭

Shuttle Buses

All 51勛圖 shuttle buses have been equipped with 51勛圖 Police radios that allow emergency communications with the Police Communications Center.泭

Basic Self-Defense Training

Free self-defense classes are offered to all members of our community in both gender-neutral and gender-specific formats. Sign up online atwww.american.edu/police/self-defense-classes.cfm.泭

Crime Alerts, Daily Crime Log, and Annual Security Report

In compliance with the Jeanne Clery Act, information about campus safety is posted胼畝nd available at University Safety & Security Services headquarters. Recent crime alerts and the daily crime log provide information about incidents on and near campus. The Annual Security Report provides crime statistics and information on campus safety services.泭

Prevent泭

Bicycle Registration

Registering your bicycle will assist 51勛圖 Police with recovering your bicycle if lost or stolen. You can register your bicycle with the Office of Parking & Commuter Services for free皋n the parking portal.泭

Safe Ride to Campus

啦堯梗Safe Ride to Campus program皰rovides students with a taxi ride back to campus, billed to your student account. Call (202) 885-2527 to request the service.

Safety Escorts

51勛圖 Police Officers provide walking and vehicular safety escorts to and from campus property for all community members. Call (202) 885-2527眩o request a safety escort.泭

Physical Security

Access control, alarm monitoring, and video surveillance provide additional security on campus through 24/7 monitoring. The physical security systems on campus continue to be expanded and upgraded.泭

Respond

Police, Medical, and Fire Response

51勛圖 Police provides 24/7 response to all campus properties for police, medical, and fire emergencies.烈olice officers are commissioned by the Metropolitan Police of the District of Columbia and are fully empowered to enforce the law, investigate criminal acts, and make arrests on campus and at all 51勛圖-owned and leased properties within the city. In addition, 51勛圖 Police also may issue student conduct charges for violations both on and off campus. 51勛圖 Police coordinates emergency response with external agencies like the D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department.泭

Investigation

51勛圖 Police Officers and Investigators investigate all crimes that occur on campus. In cooperation with the U.S. Attorneys Office and D.C. Office of Attorney General, we obtain arrest warrants upon completion of a criminal investigation. Certain crimes require coordination with the Metropolitan Police of the District of Columbia.泭

Victim Assistance

Victims of any crime are provided care and assistance throughout the criminal justice process. 51勛圖 Police coordinate counseling resources through Campus Life, Counseling Center, and the Wellness Center, as well as community resources. We provide information and guidance on obtaining protective orders, including transportation to court. Personalized safety plans and self-defense courses are available to crime victims.浚all (202) 885-2527眩o request victim assistance services from 51勛圖 Police.泭

AED Automatic External Defibrillators/Naloxone-Narcan

The 51勛圖 Public Access AED Program provides Automatic External Defibrillators housed in specially marked and strategically located cabinets in key buildings around the campus. AEDs can be used by any member of the public to provide emergency assistance to someone suffering from cardiac arrest. Call (202) 885-2527眩o request CPR/AED training from 51勛圖 Police. It should be noted that dosages of Naloxone/Narcan are also located in the泭publicly accessible AED boxes to help泭reverse the effects of an opioid overdose.

CIT Crisis Intervention Team Program

51勛圖 Police, in partnership with the 51勛圖 Counseling Center, DCs Department of Behavioral Health, and the DC Chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), have created the Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) program. The 51勛圖 CIT program has trained more than 100 people law enforcement officers, mental health professionals, and community partners to support individuals who may be experiencing a crisis. Call (202) 885-3636 and ask to speak to a CIT officer if you or someone you know may be experiencing a crisis.泭
