Process Overview and Timeline
There are three simple steps for the 2025-2026泭process. To live on campus, applicants must follow all three steps and their respective deadlines.
Extensive information about the process is available throughout this page. Please review the provided information泭before contacting the Housing office.
Step 1: Complete the Housing Application (early February)
The application opens to all current students. Simply visit the 51勛圖 Housing Portal and complete your application. On the application, you'll agree to the Housing License Agreement (HLA), and complete your Roommate Profile. Here you'll also view your pre-assigned Housing Community (as applicable). These include泭Honors/Dc Impact Scholars/51勛圖 Compass, Black Affinity Housing, Sophomore Housing or Upper divison泭Housing.
Step 2: Roommate Matching (February - March; Optional)
After you complete your Housing Application, you'll be able to begin Roommate Matching. During this step, you'll be able to search for and match with a roommate(s) who have the same Housing Community. By roommate matching, you are granting your group the ability to select a room on your behalf. HRL encourages all students to match with a roommate(s) before room selection to ensure you can choose your own roommate(s). All rooms will be filled by the start of the fall semester.
Students may create or join a group of 2-6 students as each group member completes the Housing Application (Step 1). Students may make changes to their group configuration until the time they select their housing in Step 3. The majority of rooms are double occupancy. Groups of 3-6泭may need to assign their group across multiple double occupancy rooms should a larger room-type be unavailable.
Step 3: Room Selection (late March)
Starting late March, you will select your own room through in the 51勛圖 Housing Portal. Your options will be based upon your approved community and classification (sophomore or upperclass). Each student will have a personalized Room Selection Timeslot. If you completed Roommate Matching, the roommate with the earliest timeslot can select a room for your group.
During this step, students will be able to view and select a housing assignment. Any member of a group can select for their group on or after their selection time begins.
- Who picks on which days?泭View your timeslot on the泭. Please note your application submission date has no impact on the timeslot you are assigned.泭
- March 19-21:泭Sophomore timeslots begin between 10 a.m.-4泭p.m.
- March 22-23:泭Selection open. No new timeslots begin over the weekend
- March 24-26:泭Upper division timeslots begin between 10 a.m.-4泭p.m.

Affinity Housing
Our Affinity Housing communities泭celebrate the diversity of our泭students, and create supportive and inclusive environments to thrive. In addition to our Black Affinity Housing, offered since 2020, Housing & Residence Life is excited to introduce two new communities: First-Generation Affinity Housing and LGBTQIA+ Affinity Housing.泭
All Affinity Housing communities are open to all undergraduate populations. Students may express their interest through the Housing Application and can learn more about each community here.泭
Doubles-As-Singles
Beginning in the 2025-2026 academic year, Housing & Residence Life will designate rooms in specific residence halls as double-as-single buyouts. These rooms are built as double occupancy spaces but will only have one resident.
This will increase the opportunity for rising sophomore and upperclass students to select a single room during Room Selection without an approved ASAC accommodation and outside of Nebraska Hall (where applicable). (Note: Students that currently have or are seeking a disability-related housing accommodation should follow the ASAC Three-Step Process to ensure they are appropriately assigned to spaces that meet their approved accommodation.)
For the 2025-2026 academic year, the following floors will be designated as double-as-single buyouts. The going rate for these rooms is equivalent to the double-as-single room rate for the building. View all our room rates泭here泭(2025-2026 rates to be posted closer to selection).

Reapplication Process
Is my housing for the entire academic year?
Your participation in the Reapplication process is your agreement to live in 51勛圖-operated housing for both the fall and spring semesters. You are contractually committed泭to live on campus for the full academic year; cancellation fees will apply should you decide to leave on campus housing, and move off campus at any point during the year. Students leaving the residence halls for an approved reason (study abroad, permanent withdrawal, or transfer) may not be subject to cancellation fees with proper documentation.
What buildings can I live in?
See the chart above for the buildings available according to your residential classification.
Will I be able to choose my roommate(s)?
Yes, you will have the opportunity to create a roommate group during Step 2: Roommate Matching. Roommates will be able to select together if there is open space still available at their time of selection. Groups can be made up of students without regard to sex, gender, gender identity, or gender expression. Groups can also be made up of students with both sophomore and upperclass residential classifications and will be able to select in buildings available to both classifications.
What if I don't have a specific roommate in mind?
No problem. If you do not have an intended roommate, you will simply participate in Reapplication as an individual. As such, you will not need to create a group in Step 2 and will select from an available space during Step 3: Room Selection. Participating in Reapplication as an individual does not guarantee a single room assignment. Single rooms are very limited and students should expect to select a double occupancy space or larger.
Is there a cancellation fee if I am accepted to study abroad next fall?
Students who have already been accepted and paid the deposit to study abroad in fall should not participate in the Reapplication process. If you are unsure about your plans to study abroad in the fall, you should participate in the room selection process and secure a space. Students who participate in an approved study abroad program during the fall semester will be exempt from the housing cancellation fee. If you do select a housing assignment, complete a the cancellation application in the as soon as possible so your space can be assigned to another student.
If you select a space and then cancel to participate in a study abroad, your vacant space will be reassigned based on high demand for campus housing and we will not be able to accomondate roommate requests to fill the space.
I'm studying abroad in the fall. Will I have housing for spring?
Students who participate in study abroad in the fall 2025泭semester who are interested in living on campus for the following spring semester should submit their Spring-Only application for on-campus housing by the priority application deadline to receive priority consideration for on-campus housing.
Information will be sent to you via email by October for the spring application process. Hall or roommate preferences are not guaranteed for students returning in the spring, but efforts will be made to meet those requests.
I'm planning to study abroad this spring. Should I participate in room selection?
You should participate in the Reapplication process. Students who participate in an approved study abroad program during spring泭will be exempt from the cancellation fee.
What accommodations does 51勛圖 provide for students with disabilities?
If you wish to request disability-related housing accommodations, you must have completed the housing accommodation request process through the Academic Support and泭Access Center (ASAC) by the deadline, February 24th at noon. Accommodations can include泭access to single bedrooms, access to private bathroom, or approval for an emotional support animal.泭
Please note: Housing accommodation requests typically take at least three weeks to process, so students should start the ASAC process as soon as possible. Students can initiate this process through the ASAC泭Disability Related Housing Accommodations Process泭page. If you have questions, please contact ASAC at 202-885-3360 before泭the room selection process.
What if I need a Gender-Based Consideration?
Students who need housing considerations due to gender泭should complete the泭. Considerations may include access to affirming bathrooms, roommates, and room type. If you would like to request a Gender-Based Consideration, you must complete the Center for Diversity and泭Inclusions process by the deadline,泭February 24th.泭Every effort will be made to accomodate these requests in consultation with CDI.泭Please note, the Gender-Based Consideration process takes at least three泭weeks to complete and should be initiated well before the deadline.
Students interested in opting into All-Gender Housing and living with differently gendered roommates do not need to fill out the Gender-Based Housing Considerations form. Students can select the All-Gender Housing option through the 51勛圖 Housing Portals regular online application. The Gender-Based Housing Consideration form is only for students who have considerations for their housing based on their gender identity.
What if I'm also applying to be a Resident Assistant (RA)?
Students applying to be a Resident Assistant (RA) should review the questions and answers below to guide them through the Repplication Process.
- Q: Im planning to apply to be an RA. Should I apply for Reapplication?
- A: Yes, if you plan to live on campus regardless of being hired as a Resident Assistant. If you only plan to live on campus if hired as a Resident Assistant, you do not need to apply for Reapplication until hired.
- Q: What happens if Im not hired as an RA and I still prefer to live on campus?泭
- 插:泭You will be notified if you are hired as an RA before room selection and can simply participate in room selection to choose a space.
Living Off Campus
Is there help for finding off-campus housing?
HRL provides several off-campus resources and services, including a video guide to moving off campus and an off-campus posting tool.
I currently live off campus. Can I live on-campus next year?
Yes, simply apply through the 51勛圖 Housing Portal and follow the instructions on this webpage.
General Housing
Who is guaranteed housing?
Beginning with the Fall 2025 cohort, 51勛圖 will implement a two-year residency requirement. Students will be required to live in campus housing their first and second year. Upperclass students who wish to live on campus are encouraged to apply but are not guaranteed housing.
Undergraduate students, including students who are abroad or on a leave of absence, are eligible to participate in the Reapplication process. There are approximately 800 spaces available for rising juniors and seniors, and while not all who apply will secure their preferred space, options will be available.
How is my classification determined for where I can live?
Residential classification refers to your eligibility for certain housing locations, as well as whether you are guaranteed on-campus housing. Typically, it reflects how many semesters you've been eligible to live on campus (not including summer) or were abroad.
How much does it cost to live on campus?
Refer to the Academic Year Rates page for housing costs. For questions specific to your meal plan, eagleBucks, or dining dollars, contact One Card and泭Dining Services.
Are there summer storage options?
Summer storage is a popular option for students looking for a way to store their belongings while they are at home or abroad during the summer. The UPS Store provides safe and convenient storage for all 51勛圖 students. Located on campus, the UPS Store provides in-room delivery when students return in August. Stored items are placed in the student's assigned room before they return to school for the fall semester. The UPS Store has been serving 51勛圖 students since 1987; for more information about summer storage, visit the泭泭website.泭
Selection
How are Room Selection Timeslots assigned?
Room Selection Timeslots are randomly assigned by the system,泭based on the classification group you are in (Sophomore or Upperclass). Classification corresponds to the number of semesters you have been eligible to reside on campus, and only泭impacts what locations you are eligible to select from. Date of application submission has no impact on the timeslot you are assigned.泭
What if space is unavailable for me to select?
You can participate in Rolling Reapplication.
