SIS organizes a number of short-term, experiential programs abroad and泭internships abroad each summer. Some programs are faculty-led and others are courses offered at partner institutions abroad where students will be directly enrolled. Program locations change each summer to reflect the needs and interests of the SIS student population. The detailed curricula of the programs make them ideal for students who wish to concentrate on a specific region or topic area. Each one offers ample opportunity to interact with local and regional leaders, conduct field research, and engage in challenging internship positions.

Summer 2025 Faculty-Led Programs

Location:泭The Hague, The Netherlands泭

Dates in Country:泭June 9 19, 2025泭

Description:泭This seminar will take a close look at the International Criminal Court (ICC) and consider its effectiveness in investigating and prosecuting those who have been charged with the four crimes that fall within its jurisdiction: genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and aggression. At its core, this seminar will challenge students to consider some fundamental questions:泭

Can the ICC fairly and efficiently enforce international laws and deliver justice to victims of genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and aggression?泭泭

How can states, NGOs, and the international community overcome the considerable obstacles standing in the way of the enforcement of international human rights?泭泭

In a world comprised of sovereign states working to advance their national interests, who works to advance the interests and protect the lives and rights of people whose governments care not a whit about them?泭泭

Is the worlda world composed of nation statessimply not ready to enforce international laws?泭泭

Description: National identity has been a constitutive part of the fabric of international affairs for centuries, but the relationship between states, nations, regions, and other human communities remains fraught and contested. Nations are imaginedbrought into being and sustained through ongoing efforts to envision and enact thembut this does not make them any less consequential than any raw physical or material factor. Scotland presents a particularly interesting case; in that it has at various times been both an independent kingdom and part of a multinational state. The United Kingdom's decision to leave the European Union has reactivated a number of debates about Scotland's identity and how it should be governed, and the conclusion of those debates is far from clear. This seminar will allow students to examine these issues up close through a variety of invited talks, site visits, fieldwork exercises, and class discussions.

Dates in Country: June 13 21, 2025泭

Description: Analysis of the impact of programming by the WAVE Trauma Center on inter-communal efforts to build peace and social cohesion in Northern Ireland. The program will begin with four weeks of background reading and presentations by and interviews with subject matter experts. Ten days of field study and cultural immersion in Northern Ireland will follow. The last two weeks of the practicum will be devoted to the preparation of a report (deliverable) and an oral presentation to the client of the findings of the report.

SIS Travel Practica

Location: Dar es Salaam, Tanzania泭

Faculty Lead: Professor Nina Yamanis泭

Dates in Country: June 29 July 13, 2025泭

Description: The client is Muhimbili University of Allied Sciences (MUHAS), the national hospital and school of public health in Tanzania. The students will conduct evaluation research for one or two projects run out of the Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health at MUHAS. The students will be working under Tanzanian researchers with ongoing projects focused on sexual reproductive health and/or mental health in Tanzania. The students will be embedded in a Tanzanian research team and will use their evaluation skills, and practice qualitative data collection and analysis skills.泭泭泭

Summer 2025 Partner Programs

51勛圖 Centers Abroad offer in-person, for credit internship opportunities for graduate students at the , and centers. These opportunities are managed by 51勛圖 Abroad and any questions should be directed to their office.

How the programs work

  • Students may apply for their program of choice (all programs are competitive and application does not guarantee admission). Some internship programs also require an application.
  • Students are registered for their respective course by SIS OIP for the summer term at the time of registration.
  • Students pay 51勛圖 tuition and are billed directly through Student Accounts. Financial aid packages can apply.
  • Some programs include a mandatory program fee. Students can learn about whether or not such a fee exists on each program's respective web page.
  • Summer program泭fees may include in-country accommodations, ground transportation, some meals, site visits and field trips, and internship placement (if applicable). Program specific websites will list any expenses in greater detail.
  • Students are typically responsible for their own airfare, immunizations, visas (if applicable), supplies, most meals, and other personal living expenses while on the program.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Status as a graduate student at 51勛圖. Non-51勛圖 graduate students may only apply to select programs (see program specific pages for eligibility).
  • Good academic and university standing.
  • Approved plan of study. As part of the application process, students should meet with their academic advisors to get approval for the courses they plan to take.
